This multi-genre literacy assignment will assess students’ comprehension of Anthem and pre-test their abilities to align their rhetorical choices with their communication purpose and intended audience (required for the summative assessment). The exercise’s objective is to help students gain an empathetic understanding of the ways that institutions popularize rhetoric to persuade people to see the world as they present it and consider how this rhetoric impacts our worldviews of ourselves and others. As my students primarily use a formalist/new criticism lens to analyze literature, I wanted this assignment to bridge considering how a text’s rhetoric creates meaning with applying a postcolonial and social-class lenses to question how rhetoric (inside and outside of the text) impacts an individual’s identity.
